En las instalaciones realizadas por la artista chilena Pilar Mackenna conviven elementos conectados por forma y color, generados a partir de observaciones y reflexiones sobre la naturaleza y la geometría, haciendo alusión de cierta manera al encuentro entre el mundo natural en tensión con el hombre y la cultura. Estos elementos incluyen figuras dibujadas, construidas y recolectadas, que se pueden clasificar en dos fuentes aparentemente antagónicas: una relacionada con formas orgánicas como espinas, corales, hojas, helechos, pétalos, plumajes, cascadas, raíces y volcanes; y otra asociada a elementos más geométricos y de construcción como cajas, plataformas, piscinas, tuberías, pirámides y rectas.
Ecosistemas parte del trabajo de prueba y de error que ocurre dentro del proceso creativo de la artista, funcionando como una suerte de mesa de trabajo. A su vez, referencia el gesto de colectar y clasificar especies exóticas o raras – al igual que los naturalistas del siglo XVII y XVIII – sugeridas en las pequeñas piezas que conforman la instalación de la vitrina.
Los ecosistemas suelen formar una serie de cadenas que muestran la interdependencia de los organismos dentro del sistema o hábitat. Es así, que la instalación en el gabinete aborda conceptos como la simbiosis y las relaciones sinérgicas entre organismos de diferentes especies, haciendo también alusión a cómo se aplica este concepto en sociedades y grupos en donde está presente la idea de dependencia de unos con otros para subsistir.
Desde una mirada centrada en la observación de lo macro y lo micro, Pilar Mackenna genera constantes relaciones tanto conceptuales como formales, en donde la figuración y la abstracción se encuentran en tránsito de lo bidimensional a lo tridimensional, propiciando un encuentro entre el dibujo, la pintura y el volumen, los cuales se apropian del espacio, tal como un sistema en crecimiento.

In the installations by the Chilean artist Pilar Mackenna elements coexists. These are connected by form and color, generated from observations and reflections on nature and geometry and referring to the meeting point between the nature in tension with the humans and the culture. These elements include drawn, constructed and recollected figures, which can be qualified in two apparently, antagonistic types: one is related to organic forms like thorns, corals, leafs, ferns, petals, plumages, cascades, roots and volcanoes. The other type has more geometric and constructed elements, like boxes, platforms, swimming pools, tubes, pyramids and straight lines.
Ecosystems is part of the work of attempts and mistakes that happens in the cretive process of the artist, functioning like a working table. For the artist, it reference to collecting and classifying exotic or rare species – like the naturalists of the 17th and 18th century – suggested in small pieces that adjust the installation in the cabinet.
The ecosystems usally form a series that show the interdependence of the organisms inside a system or an habitat. So, the installation in the cabinet discusses concepts like the symbiosis between the organisms of different species. Also, it refers to how this concepts is used in societies and groups in which the idea of dependence from ones to others for surviving is present.
From the focus on the observation of the macro and the micro, Pilar Mackenna generates, constantly conceptual and formal relations. There, the figuration and the abstraction meet in transit the two- or the three-dimensional, propitiating a meeting point between drawing, painting and volume. These appropriates to the space, like a system in growth.
